Carpet Installation Question

Posted in Carpet on July 12th, 2006

Question:
I’m thinking about installing carpet in 2 rooms (rental property; approx. 15 x 14 each).  I’m a beginner and I’m wondering if it’s better to pay carpet installer  ($7.00 sq yd; around $400.00 for my 2 rooms) or should I try to install the carpet myself ?

Answer:
In most instances laying carpet is not a hard job, accept for the fact the carpet being heavy and awkward but you have one additional consideration. Your rooms are 14 x 15 and carpet is in 12 foot widths you will have to make at least one seam across the entire room. The preferred method is to use a seaming iron and carpet hot glue tape. Not  difficult but one this does require some practice to make a good seam. Now laying the carpet you start by installing the tackless carpet bar strips around the perimeter of the room, then lay the padding, tape the padding seams to insure the padding wont move once its in place. Lay out the carpet being very careful to insure the grain of the pattern is square with the room, push the carpet into the tackless strips on one side of the room, then using a knee kicker or strecter pull the carpet tight to the opposite wall and set in place.  The price you ngot for installation looks a little hign, but there could be other things determining those estimates. Things like is the room furnished?  If it is, who is going to be moving the furnishings? Is there carpet in this room that is going to removed? If there is who is going to be pulling it up and disposing it?  I would call around to a some carpet stores and get the names their installers they use, then get bids.  Hope this helps
